HP Software-Defined Storage (SDS)
HPE SDS stands for the licensed Software-defined storage. Software-based storage (HPE SDS) enables users and organizations to decouple storage resources from hardware platforms.
By creating programmable storage, organizations can benefit from greater flexibility, higher performance, and faster scalability. This approach enables storage resources to be an integral part of a larger SDDC software-based data center, where resources can be easily, automatically configured.
How does HPE SDS work?
Software-based storage is an approach to data management where data storage resources are abstracted from physical storage hardware and are therefore more flexible.
Resource flexibility is enabled by scheduling capabilities for storage that quickly and automatically adapts to new demands. This programmability includes policy-based management of resources and automatic provisioning and changing of storage capacity.
Being software-independent in nature, this deployment model also greatly simplifies SLAs and QoS, making it much easier to implement security, governance and data protection. When implemented correctly, this model increases performance, availability, and efficiency.
Software-Defined Storage benefits
- More efficiency
- Ability to program and automate
- Faster changes and scaling up and down
- Becoming independent of hardware vendors
Why using SDS and SDDC?
- Speeding up work
- Data center automation
- Need for new programs
- Improved monitoring, tracking of usage and changes in infrastructure and data
Types of software-based storage
There is a wide range of software-based storage on the market today, including:
- Hypervisor based
- Unstructured data storage scale
- Container-based (ie, running in a Docker container)
- Distributed file systems for loading component storage
- HCI software (storage space combined with networking, computing and virtualization software in one package)
Where is HPE SDS used?
Among the most used spaces used by HPE SDS, the following can be mentioned:
- Modernizing data center infrastructure: policy-based storage as a service.
- Rugged Systems: Tactical Scenarios and First Responder Situations, Environmentally Challenging Environments, and Mobile
- Remote office/branches: using existing hardware (servers) to make more use of existing funds and ease of deployment and management
- Hybrid Cloud Implementation: Both on-premise and hosted private cloud implementations can be managed with the same data management system, without changes to tools, reports and training.
HP StoreOnce VSA
For cost-effective data protection, HP StoreOnce VSA software provides fast, efficient and scalable backup and recovery that reduces the need for dedicated hardware and lowers storage, rack space and power costs at each site . StoreOnce VSA is a hardware-independent backup and deduplication solution that runs like a virtual machine. Stored data can be moved between VSAs and other StoreOnce platforms without “data rehydration” and without dedicated storage hardware.
This flexible backup target with built-in data protection can help keep critical workloads and business applications online in fully virtualized or remote locations with fewer IT administration skills. As with other HPE SDS products, the entire storage infrastructure can be managed from a single console.
HP Hyper Converged 200
A licensed hyperconverged system is the next step in the evolution of IT architectures and brings together the latest advances in converged infrastructure, virtualization, and software-defined storage technologies. Everything you need for your virtualized environment, including servers, storage, virtualization software, networking, and management, is fully integrated and condensed into a single, highly available appliance.
A Hyper Converged 200 appliance comes pre configured in a single 2U chassis and requires no special training. Data protection is built into the system – no additional software is required. Automated data storage tiering enables faster access to data when needed. Using the installation wizard, you can implement it in less than 15 minutes.
This HPE solution gives you robust data services from proven StoreVirtual storage and powerful HP ProLiant servers. Benefit from professional features typically offered by storage arrays, such as: 99.999% availability – without the complexity. Run a variety of different workloads, from messaging and collaboration workloads to analytical and transactional workloads, without over-provisioning or worrying about data availability
HP StoreVirtual VSA
Take advantage of the full benefits of server virtualization to run your business applications and achieve five 9s of high availability with HPE SDS. StoreVirtual VSA software transforms internal or directly attached storage capacity into a complete shared storage array without the cost and complexity of traditional storage.
StoreVirtual VSA integrates enterprise-grade SAN functionality into the server infrastructure and simplifies management. Tight integration with VMware® and Microsoft makes it easy to deploy and manage data on any vSphere or Hyper-V server locally or from a remote location. StoreVirtual VSA’s unique scale-out architecture lets you add storage instantly without sacrificing performance, while built-in high availability and disaster recovery capabilities improve business continuity and resilience for your entire server environment.
